Did you know that color selection can have a lasting impact on how large your interior space feels? Here are a few quick and easy ways to make a space feel larger than it really is:
- Proper color selection:
- Light paint colors tend to recede, meaning they feel further away. Dark colors tend to advance towards the eye, making them feel closer. If you want a long and narrow room to appear more square, you can paint the end walls (the shorter ones) a dark color and leave the long walls a light color. To the eye the light colors will “push out” and appear larger, while the further dark wall will “come forward” to the making the room feel more appropriate.
- A light ceiling color can make a space feel taller and more spacious while a dark ceiling makes a room shorter.
- Warm colors also act as dark colors in the way that they appear closer to the eye than light or cool colors.

- Add Stripes for interest:
- Consider adding some visual interest to the room with stripes! Vertical stripes can make a room feel larger, while horizontal stripes make the room feel smaller.
- Highlight the architectural features:
- A quick way to enhance a room with paint is to highlight it’s features. If your room has crown molding, decorative trim or window casings, consider painting them a complementary color to highlight them. Often this is done with a bright white to add a balancing contrast to the space.
